What do Emergency Doctors do?

Emergency Doctors, also known as Emergency Physicians, don’t focus on one specific specialty but rather they are trained to evaluate a person’s injuries and attempt to stabilize the patient and alleviate the patient’s pain directly. Once the patients are stabilized, they are sent to be treated by specialists. These specialists may include doctors who specialize in neurology, cardiology, and pulmonology. Emergency Physicians are able to treat a multitude of patients at once, as well as patients from all aspects of life, ranging from adolescents to seniors.

Prerequisites

Comparable to other medical professions such as surgeons or pediatricians, Emergency Physicians start off with the standard 4 years of medical school. In order to qualify for medical school, one needs to enroll in all of the required courses and perform exceptionally well on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). Upon commencement, Emergency Physicians need to go into residency for emergency medicine which normally consists of 3 to 5 years, with 4 years being the more optimal option. After that, Emergency Physicians then apply for a specialty board certification which represents that the individual has acquired an advanced knowledge, training, and skills in a particular area of medicine. After this is completed, an Emergency Physicians may choose to enroll in a specific fellowship program which has their own respective time completion range.
